Celebrate community and join us in this virtual Party in White from the safety of your own home with your own quarantine-friendly grouping.

Thursday, August 6 starting at 6:45 p.m.

Here’s how it works:

  • Register online for the Bunyaad Fête en Blanc. A zoom link will be sent to you the day before the event.
  • Find a place around your house or a safely socially-distanced location outside.
  • Grab your quarantine-friendly grouping to join you in this party.
  • Dress in white and set up your tables and picnic. Set up your laptop, phone, tablet, whatever on your table so you can “dine” with everyone.
  • At 6:45 p.m., we’ll open the Fête as a virtual party and watch as we all put the finishing touches on our tables.
  • At 7 p.m., we will have opening welcome and the napkin wave (yes, the beginning of Fête always starts with the white napkin wave)
  • Enjoy an evening of dining together virtually and listening to the stories and music of Leo DiSanto who will be with us all evening.

Attending our local Fête en Blanc is an annual tradition for our Ephrata-based Rug Room.  We love the community party and if Covid-19 has taught us anything, our community is truly worldwide.

    Let Me Introduce: Arshad

    Arshad, usually called by her nickname Bebe, and her family live in the village of Darianwala located approximately six miles from the Indian border in Northeast Pakistan.

    Arshad and her husband Mustaq have been working for Bunyaad for the past five years (since 2009). Prior to joining Bunyaad the family had been drifting from place to place in hopes of finding work that would support the entire family. As a woman working outside the home would not have been acceptable for Arshad and so the challenge of providing for the entire family rested on Mustaq’s shoulders.

    How does a family in rural Pakistan make ends meet when jobs are scarce and mostly seasonal?

    Celebrating Rug Making

    A wonderful night celebrating rug making and the joy and relaxation of adult coloring!

    Over 30 coloring fans gathered at the Bunyaad Rug Room at Ten Thousand Villages in Ephrata, PA, to learn how fairly paid adult artisans carefully color intricate graphs as part of the rug making process. After a short journey through talams, rug graphs and hand knotting rugs, each person got to color their own rug graph tile.

    “I came for the coloring but I leave with a much greater appreciation for hand knotted rugs and the quality and uniqueness that fair trade produces,” remarked one coloring night participant. “And I’m still in awe of how many knots are in a 9’x12′ Persian rug…over seven million! Just hard to believe that that many knots are all tied by hand!”

    The Dougs Say Goodbye and Farewell Pakistan

    Doug and master designerWe enjoyed a great time in Pakistan. Everywhere we went we met friendly, helpful and incredibly hospitable people. It seemed like everyone wanted to shake our hands and give us a hug. On Sunday afternoon, while touring the old Lahore Fort, a number of people wanted their pictures taken with us. Contrary to what we hear and read in the media about Pakistan, it’s a great place to travel – safe, friendly, hospitable and very scenic.

    Fair Trade is a Revolution

    “A bond with customers based on shared values is the strongest bond you’ll ever make,” stressed Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s and currently working with Stamp Stampede, a venture dedicated to getting the money out of politics.

    Sitting in the room with over 280 other fair traders at the Fair Trade Federation Conference in Burlington, Vermont last week, I almost stood up and shouted “AMEN.”

    Renee Bowers, Fair Trade Federation Executive Director, opened that morning sessions reminding us that “as fair traders, we work to give voice” to those who otherwise would not have as loud of a voice in the world.

    And in this week where we celebrate World Fair Trade Day, I want to say thank you to our customers who are using their economic dollar to vote for the change they wish to see in the world.

  • Bunyaad is the Newest Fair Trade Federation Member

    We are thrilled to be approved as the newest Fair Trade Federation (FTF) member this week.

    Bunyaad is the first fair trade rug business to join the FTF. The FTF is the trade association that strengthens and promotes North American organizations fully committed to fair trade. Bunyaad is proud to be included with the more than 240 FTF members who have one primary purpose: to support artisans and farmers in developing countries through the practice of fair trade. Fair trade guides each and every trading decision that FTF members make – just like Bunyaad has always operated, right from the beginning.

    Thanks to stellar work by Bunyaad staffer Doug Horst, we sailed through the FTF application process and easily qualified for membership. The FTF family includes a number of other highly respected fair traders in Canada and the USA like:
